  • The currency in Georgia is the Georgian Lari (GEL). While major credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, it's advisable to carry some local currency, especially when traveling to remote regions.

  • Georgian Currency: The official currency of Georgia is the Georgian Lari, abbreviated as GEL. Banknotes and coins of various denominations are in circulation. Familiarize yourself with the denominations and currency symbols to facilitate transactions:

    • Banknotes: GEL 5, GEL 10, GEL 20, GEL 50, GEL 100, GEL 200.

    • Coins: Tetri (subunit of the Lari): 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 Tetri.

  • Currency Exchange: When arriving in Georgia, you can exchange foreign currency for Georgian Lari at banks, currency exchange offices (exchange bureaus), and ATMs, which are widely available in urban areas. While some larger businesses and hotels may accept major foreign currencies like USD or EUR, it's advisable to have local currency for smaller purchases and in rural regions where foreign currency may not be accepted.

  • Credit Cards: Major credit cards, such as Visa and MasterCard, are widely accepted in Georgia, especially in larger cities like Tbilisi and Batumi. You can use credit cards for hotel bookings, dining, shopping, and other transactions. However, it's still a good idea to carry some cash, particularly in rural areas and smaller towns.
